Oahu Lifestyle Photographer | Aloha Family Photography

Oahu has some pretty amazing beaches and outdoor locations for your photo session. But, outdoors is not the only place to do photos. I love doing in-your-home sessions. They are perfect for families to really capture life at home.

Baking sessions are one of my favorites for in home, they are messy, sweet, and really tug at my heart strings (more on that in a future blog).

Anyways, this family is absolutely amazing, I love their energy, playfulness, and beautiful home on Oahu.

Lighting | Tips | Oahu Family Photographer

I would love to go over some quick easy tips about lighting. It is probably one of the most asked questions I get.
"Chelsie, what time will we do out photos?!"
I generally do photos about an hour before sunset. I am not a golden light photographer. I LOVE light, full but soft light. To achieve the look I want, one hour prior to sunset.

There are exceptions but because we never know what the weather will be I plan for an hour before sunset.

The fun thing about being a Mom is that I take so many photos of my kids, so I can go out some days at noon and have perfect lighting. I always keep an eye on the weather. When it's cloudy its generally perfect for that soft creamy light.

Below I will show you some photos at different times.

A lot of variables go into what the final photos will look like, but that is all part of my job.
I love being able to adjust as needed in camera to get the look I want, then enhance the photos further with presets I make in Lightroom.

Oahu Family Photographer | Splash Session | Amazing Family

I generally leave a photo session and have a feeling of excitement. I love working with families. This session I did stands out, I try not to "play favorites" but this one, this one is my favorite.

At the time our newest child was about 3 months old. So I brought the whole family to base and dropped my husband and our three daughters off at the park. I then headed to my session. I listen to the radio and did my usual pre photo shoot car dancing. I pulled up and immediately my clients pulled up next to me. I don't know why but this felt like a great sign. Since we were both about 10 minutes early. Right away I felt a connection, the Mom Shelby had the same hair style and hair color as me! I complemented her AMAZING style. We walked down to the beach and I really let myself be me at the session. I joked with them, we chatted, the kids played, splashed, and then although I have suggested before at sessions, I highly encouraged them to get in the water. The results were amazing. I also got in the water, I was soaked up to my belly button! Best of all I knew I made friends for life.

After the session I was on cloud 9, it was amazing, I kept looking at the back of my camera and felt so much pure excitement. Upon getting home, I started my usual post session uploading and all the behind the scenes work.

When they came over to see everything, again, it was just an amazing environment. Their kids played with my kids while we looked through their photos, I may have teared up because I'm always emotional when people love the photos. She may have too, I don't remember, and I didn't want to look and her see my all teary eyed.

Then I found out the family was MOVING away from this beautiful island Oahu. So I ordered everything with rush shipping because I love hand delivery/pick up!

Anyways, I absolutely loved that session. That session is now my samples for basically everything in my studio. Here are a few of my favorites.

Meet the Photographer | Oahu Family Photographer

Aloha,
I'm Chelsie Thompson. A few faq's
From Oregon, currently living on the beautiful island of Oahu. I LOVE the windward side, it's so green and mostly quiet.
I've been interested in photography since childhood. I used to use a crayola film camera and take photos of my sisters, I would LINE them up and tell them to smile. I also fancied taking photos of my toys and things around the house. I had film cameras till I was 13, I then got my first digital camera, GAME CHANGER! I could take photos and put them on the computer that same day! Every one knew I was the photographer and documented everything.

Since then my goals and dreams have grown. I always knew I wanted to be a photographer. I still dream of grand adventures and National Geographic photo shoots. But at the end of a family photo session, I look at all the beautiful photos and history that was recorded, and I love my job.

Back to me.. I love coffee, tea, water, and Lanikai juice! I have always been on the "fruitier" side of life, which might be why I love working with toddlers, they are so silly. I know, I have a couple of them. OK, I have 3 daughters! Silly is my life.

I am also an adventurer, I love to explore, hangout at the beach, build sand castles, splash in the waves, and more. That is why living on Oahu and being a family photographer is PERFECT! I crave adventure, I love photographing my family and other families having fun, playing, laughing, and having a good time.

I recently became an admin of my local military spouse photo group. Which is so amazing and exciting. I get to help plan photo meet ups, coffee meet ups and more! I'm all about community over competition and one of my good friends actually is a family photographer also!

Sunset Family Session | Oahu Family Photographer

Kualoa State Park is a beautiful location. Living on Oahu has been the easiest place to be a photographer. This location is amazing because the endless spots. At the front of the park is an amazing field with a perfect mountain view. Then you can walk across the parking lot and dig your sand in the toes. There are endless options for because on Oahu but this is my favorite. The beach at the front has the perfect view of China mans hat. Being a family photographer on Oahu is amazing, I not only get to work with local families and military families living on Oahu, I also get to photograph traveling and vacationing families.

This family is on their way off island, they were stunning. The love their boys share, is beautiful. It must be Oahu families that are the best because they are always up for having fun. I often do umping photos and silly photos with families.

Kawainui Marsh Trail | Family Photo Session | Oahu Lifestyle Family Photographer

Oahu is such an amazing and beautiful place. Once in a while I go to non beach locations. For this amazing session we picked Kawainui Marsh Trail in Kailua, Oahu. For those who do not know, this spot is really easy and good for kids, there is a lot to do and see. Also of people refer to this as "Kailua Marsh", there is a lot of wild life in the area, TONS and TONS of fish, ducks, and birds. This little girl loved watching the ducks.
This was my second time working with this family, I love being able to have repeat clients. Being a military wife, we end up moving every few years. I also work with a lot of military families, which makes it even more unlikely I will get to photograph them more than once.

If you're in the Kailua, Oahu area, you should check out Kawainui Marsh Trail. It's great for walking and exploring.

Oahu Family Photographer | Mermaid Edition

I grew up on swimming lessons, weekends at the beach, hot summer days in the river, and a love for mermaids. In fact I don't really know anyone who didn't LOVE mermaids as a child. Now since living in Kaneohe Oahu, I realize everyone wants to be a mermaid. Since moving back to Oahu, I have mostly photographed my children as mermaids, and a super fun last minute cake smash of a mermaid a few months ago. Yesterday, I told myself, ENOUGH! Chelsie, you love mermaids it's time to photograph more of them! So I threw together a super sweet mermaid mini promo shoot for the Kailua Marine Corps Base area. This woman responded saying she would love to do it, but thought it was more for children. Which it wasn't but I also only have 1 adult tail! I got her on the schedule for today, her first HAWAII BIRTHDAY! How fitting, to spend your first Birthday on Oahu as a mermaid! Anyways, the shoot was amazing, she brought a cake, sadly the ocean has some plans and wanted a taste, so she didn't get to dive in too much!

Oahu Family Photographer - Blogging Again

I'm so excited to finally start blogging again!

A little background info, I previously ran Chelsie Thompson Photography. I photographed just about anything and everything. The exciting thing was I wanted to try everything from newborn to events to paint throwing! It was so much fun. As I grew as a photographer and a business owner I learned that focusing on one specialty with some sub-specialties would be the best move for my business. S0 I dove into a genre that I was very passionate about; women's beauty portraits. I loved every second of that adventure!
When I found out we were moving back to Hawaii, I was ecstatic! I dreamed of pineapples, I dreamed of photographing my children with pineapples, other peoples families, couples, and also just pineapples! So I decided I wanted to re-brand and FRESHEN up with something a little more fruity. Now I bring pineapples to just about every session, and everyone gets a little fruity! Plus its a BIG seller with the children, they love how "silly" it is to have a pineapple in their photos!
In 2016 I photographed 44 families and LOVED every second of it! This year I plan on keeping up with that while also adding so awesome new products! After all Aloha Family Photography is a full service studio, we offer so many awesome print products and truly believe in printing quality products that you can pass down through out your family.
